Beach Drive: The Weekender August 2 – 5


It’s August! As the summer winds down and the kids go back to school, you might find yourself wondering where summer went. The good news is that there’s still time to make the most of it. This weekend it’s all about markets, art and baseball.  On Saturday, stop by good ol’ Saturday Morning Market, or maybe the St. Pete Indie Market from 10 to 2, for all of your indie art and food needs. The Brocante Market runs all day Saturday and Sunday, too. If art’s more your thing, then take your cultured self to the James Museum’s brand-new “Art and the Animal” exhibit, or to Clyde Butcher’s Visions of Dali’s Spain at the Dali. Decisions, decisions…

THURSDAY AUGUST 2

Fine Art after 5pm: reduced admission to The Dali Museum, MFA & Imagine Museum

Fine art can be pricey. Thursdays after 5pm, visit the Dali for just $10, the Imagine Museum for $5, and the MFA for $5. Have a glass of wine and stroll the museums for the perfect Happy Hour.

James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art Presents “Art and the Animal”

A special exhibition featuring premier wildlife art from artists around the world! Organized in collaboration with The Society of Animal Artists, “Art and the Animal” will feature over 100 paintings and sculptures, with select art available for purchase. This exhibition is on display at the James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art in downtown St. Pete from July 28 – October 23, 2018.

(Off Beach): Project: First Dates at Flying Boat Brewing Co.

This one’s for all the lonely hearts out there…Project: First Dates combines speed dating and a dating card game into one amazing event, where the speed dates are slowed down so that you’ll actually have time to get to know your date as you answer a set of thought-provoking, romantic questions. Forget online dating; do it the old-fashioned way at Project: First Dates, from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Flying Boat Brewing Company.

Cult Classic Summer Movie Series at The Dali Museum: Die Hard

The Dali’s can’t-miss summer celebration — Cult Classics — is back and better than ever. Grab your lawn chair, don some movie-inspired duds and enjoy free flicks, local food truck fare, and cold craft brews. The fun goes down the first Thursday of the month all summer long. Come early to enjoy The Dali’s extended hours on Thursday nights at reduced $10 admission, then stay for the film and festivities. Doors open & vendors start serving at 7pm. Movies begin at 8:30pm. Thirsty Pelican Brew Tour

MIZE presents FRUIT BOWL Art Exhibit

Check out this funky, fruity exhibition featuring 30 local and national artists at MIZE Gallery. Each artist was assigned a fruit as inspiration for the art they created for this. Check out this see-bearing art exhibit, open July 13 – Aug 11.

Storytellers Exhibition at the Chihuly Collection

This narrative driven glass exhibition is on display at the Chihuly Collection from June 8 – Oct 31. Tickets are included with general admission and can be purchased online or in person.

St. Pete Indie Market

St. Pete Indie Market is a monthly market, featuring 80+ vendors. The market showcases local artists, indie designers, vintage collectors, food trucks, jewelry makers, horticulturists, eclectic crafters and other local businesses and organizations. Support St. Pete’s local community and shop, eat, and drink at NOVA 535 the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

St. Pete Walking Mural Tour

Hear the inside stories of the making of more than 30 murals found in the Central Arts District in downtown St. Petersburg. The four-block tour begins at Florida CraftArt, 501 Central Ave., each Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and concludes at 11:30 a.m. Call 727-821-7391 or email gallery@FloridaCraftsmen.net to book a tour, which costs $19 for adults and $11 for children. A portion of the proceeds from the tours will be used to fund future murals.

Bad Jews Presented by American Stage

A seriously smart comedy about family, faith and legacy. This can’t miss performance shares the story of a hilarious family brawl between three cousins from opposite ends of the spectrum over the heirlooms of their recently deceased grandfather. Pulitzer Prize Winning Author Gilbert King Comes to St. Pete

St. Pete’s newest independent bookstore, Tombolo Books, is bringing Pulitzer Prize winning author Gilbert King to town! The bookstore is in collaboration with Bob Devin Jones at the Studio@620 to celebrate the release of King’s newest book, Beneath a Ruthless Sun. King will appear in conversation with both Bob Devin Jones and Colette Bancroft of the Tampa Bay Times. Yoga at The Dali

Bring along your yoga mat and come ready to be inspired! Join Lucky Cat Yoga at 10:30 a.m. every Sunday at The Dali Museum for yoga. Classes are held in the Raymond James Community Room or outside in the Avant-garden, both with incredible views of the waterfront. The cost to participate is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased at the Member’s desk.

Masterpieces & Mimosas at the Dali Museum

Let’s get (Sur)real. What could be better than a Spanish brunch, complete with mimosas AND the wild works of Salvador Dali? No comparison. Grab a companion for your journey into weird and wonderful from 11 to 4pm in the museum’s Gala Cafe.

Clyde Butcher: Visions of Dali’s Spain

To create this special exhibition, The Dali invited Clyde Butcher, the renowned nature photographer often called “Florida’s Ansel Adams,” to explore and visually document Salvador Dali’s homeland. Clyde Butcher: Vision’s of Dali’s Spain provides a technically brilliant, epically scaled view of Dali’s beloved environs, to creates a euphoric experience of immersion.
