Nestled in the heart of Beach Drive, Allelo stands out as a vibrant Mediterranean-Aegean restaurant that has quickly become a local favorite. This culinary gem offers a unique dining experience that combines exquisite flavors, a cozy ambiance, and a touch of Mediterranean charm.
The name Allelo comes from the word ‘allelomimesis,’ which describes the phenomenon of a group, such as birds, coming together to form a flock. The idea of gathering is echoed throughout Allelo’s menu, where items are meant for sharing with friends.
“Our tapas and small plates are meant to be shared, and it’s all about gathering. People are here to have a great time with friends and family, just enjoying one another,” said General Manager Michelle Richards.
Allelo, which opened in the summer of 2022, is under the same management as 400 Beach Seafood & Tap House. Richards relocated to St. Petersburg to contribute to the opening of Allelo and is proud to say that about 75% of the dedicated staff members are still part of the original team.
“They’re amazing; their hard work truly shines through and it’s something I believe our guests at Allelo really
appreciate. They sense the positive energy and understand our passion for what we do,” Richards said. “This extends to our kitchen team as well; the love and care they pour into every dish is something I think truly sets us apart.”
What sets Allelo apart is its dedication to quality ingredients and authentic recipes. From traditional Aegean dishes to modern Mediterranean creations, every bite at Allelo tells a story of passion and culinary expertise. The menu is thoughtfully curated to cater to various palates, ensuring that every guest finds something to savor and enjoy.
Allelo also offers vegetarian choices, options to turn many dishes vegan, and gluten-free pasta that Richards assures is “really good!”
“We’re well-known for our Beer Tartare – we mix it right at your table,” Richards added. “It’s all about using the freshest ingredients, like our Branzino, sourced directly off the coast of Turkey. Within just 72 hours of being caught, it’s served on your plate.”
Richards noted that Beach Drive was the perfect location for Allelo, evoking the tranquil vibes of the Aegean Sea with its soft blues, relaxed ambiance, and twinkling lights. Borrowing from Mediterranean tradition, Allelo offers blankets and outdoor heaters to ensure diners stay cozy on cooler Florida evenings.
“Allelo is definitely a neighborhood gem,” Richards said. “With my dedicated team and a loyal base of regulars, there’s a familiarity when you step into our restaurant and bar.”
The restaurant caters to both locals and out-of-town guests, who often visit while staying at The Vinoy nearby. Allelo’s extensive wine list earned a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence in 2023, and its family-style brunch is quickly becoming a St. Pete favorite.
“Our wine list directly reflects our Mediterranean-Aegean concept, with an old world focus, as well as highlighting producers that are smaller in production across the world,” Richards said.
“Our weekend brunch is inspired by the concept of a Turkish breakfast where the food keeps flowing,” Richards added. “We feature Sugar Sax playing the electric saxophone on Thursday
nights and for Sunday brunch. He’s incredible and draws his own crowd with his exceptional talent.”
Allelo’s popular concept of shared plates and Mediterranean-inspired fare has captured the hearts of diners and critics alike, solidifying its place as a must-visit destination on Beach Drive. Whether you’re a seasoned foodie or simply looking for a delicious dining experience outside the ordinary fare, Allelo promises to take you on a gastronomic journey each time you visit.
