Beach Drive: The Weekender October 4-7


If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, look no further — we’ve got a calendar packed full of events for you! With everything from birthday celebrations to orchestra performances, there’s something for everyone to do. This Thursday, check out a movie in North Straub Park or watch Pakistani artist Haider Ali paint one of his beautiful jingle trucks. This Friday is First Friday, so be sure to join the monthly festivities with events like Mermosa’s Silent Disco. Saturday, SHINE Mural Festival begins, the Rowdies play against Charlotte Independence, and Green Bench turns five. Sunday hosts a bridal show at the Coliseum and trivia night at the Hollander Hotel’s Tap Room. There’s no shortage of events to enjoy this first weekend of October, so don’t miss out!

THURSDAY OCTOBER 4

Fine Art after 5pm: reduced admission to The Dali Museum, MFA & Imagine Museum

Fine art can be pricey. Thursdays after 5pm, visit the Dali for just $10, the Imagine Museum for $5, and the MFA for $5. Have a glass of wine and stroll the museums for the perfect Happy Hour.

Haider Ali, Jingle Truck Artist

Join the Museum of Fine Arts this Thursday and watch Pakistani artist, Haider Ali, live paint a car! This event is in collaboration with St. Pete’s 2018 SHINE Mural Festival, bringing more mural-style art to the city.

Ali is best known for his work in the distinctive Pakistani “jingle truck” art style, a popular form of decoration in South Asia featuring elaborate floral patterns and calligraphy on vehicles, so named by American soldiers in Afghanistan because of the bells often attached to front bumpers. In recent years, these ornate vehicles have gained widespread attention and artistic acclaim.

This event will be ongoing periodically from Thursday, October 4th at 9AM to Saturday, October 6th at 6pm. Be sure to stop by and check this out!

Stories, Poetry & Motion

Also at the Museum of Fine Arts this weekend is Stories, Poetry & Motion. Hosted by Your Real Stories, this event brings together local professional dancers and poets into a night of collaborative performance art. The event features poet Gloria Munoz and dancers Helen Hansen French, Kellie Harmon, Crystal DelGiudice, and Andee Scott.

This event takes place from 5PM to 6:30PM. Free admission.

Movies in the Park — Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

Enjoy a free movie underneath the stars every Thursday in October in North Straub Park in downtown St. Pete. Grab a blanket, low lying chair and a picnic to enjoy music beginning at 6 p.m. and tonight’s feature, ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington’ starting at dark. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 5

St. Pete Pop Up Holiday Art Gallery

Join My Favorite Art Place for the Grand Opening of the St Pete Holiday Pop Up Gallery. Enjoy viewing a variety of art – Glass, Metal, Wood, Originals, etc. and the music of Sean Hopper. You’ll find us at the Sundial, on the corner of 2nd Ave North and 2nd Street North – 7 days a week! Be sure to stop by to say Hi!

HYbar Happy Hour

Hit the bar at St. Pete’s newest hotel – The Hyatt Place St. Pete. Celebrate your long week with a cold craft cocktail or local craft brew while listening to local live music! This high brow happy hour happens every Friday night, with beautiful views and great deals.  Happy Hour runs from 4:30pm-7:30pm.

First Friday St. Pete

Celebrate every First Friday of the month in St. Pete with a free block party complete with live music and dancing! The action goes down between 2nd and 3rd streets on Central Ave. from 5:30-10 p.m.

Storytellers Exhibition at the Chihuly Collection

This narrative driven glass exhibition is on display at the Chihuly Collection from June 8 – Oct 31. Tickets are included with general admission and can be purchased online or in person.

Songs Without Words

Your Real Stories is hosting a performance arts event. It is an improvised tapestry of images, movement, words & music. Performers include Frank Wells on piano, Helen Hansen French with dance, and Maureen McDole with poetry. These participants will be interpreting the works of several regional photographers in their own unique ways for a night of art to remember.

The event will take place in the Iberian Rooster’s Sub Central and goes from 7PM-8:30PM. Tickets are $15-20 and can be purchased here.

Mermosa After Dark: A Mermazing Silent Disco

Join Mermosa for First Friday as they (quietly) launch their new outdoor lounge along the downtown waterfront with a silent disco! Featuring three DJs, this event includes hand selected wines and local beers, as well as the shop’s own local drinks.

The event begins at 8PM and ends at midnight. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased here. Attendees must be 21 or older, bring a valid ID, and a valid credit or debit card (a $75 fee will be charged if headphones for the silent disco are not returned) to check in.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 6

SHINE St. Pete Mural Festival

It’s that time of year again! This year’s annual festival will showcase new vibrant, creative and inspiring murals in St. Pete created by international, national and local artists. The new pieces will further enrich the city’s public outdoor gallery, adding new styles-from colorful geometric patterns to delicately-rendered realism-all expertly painted on large walls and even on street intersections.

This event runs through October 14th.

Saturday Morning Market at Williams Park

1st Annual Focused and Fearless Brunch

For this first weekend of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, visit the Birchwood for brunch. This event is in celebration of the women determined to live their best lives of full power, victory, and optimism.

The event begins at 11AM and ends at 2PM. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased here. Ticket purchase includes brunch, mimosas, and a special gift for each guest.

Poolside Yoga and Brunch

If there weren’t enough yoga options for you already, here’s another: poolside yoga at the Hollander Hotel at 8:30 followed by brunch. Salute the sun with Allison Moonbeam Archer then cool off in the Hollander Hotel Downtown St Petersburg’s beautiful pool. All levels are welcome for this slow flow class and mats will be provided as needed. $5 Body Electric monthly and annual members; $10 pre-registered; $15 at the door.

Green Bench Turns Five

This weekend, Green Bench Brewery turns five years old, which means it’s time to have some serious fun! The event kicks off at 11AM and runs through midnight. From 11AM-4PM, check out the Indie Flea Street Market Launch. DJ RePete will perform from 6PM-10PM. There will also be a (free) raffle consisting of donations from local names such as American Stage, the Hollander, and the Craft Kafe. Beyond this, there’s even more to see and do! On top of all of this, $1 of every Bench Life beer sold will be donated to the Boys and Girls Club! Be sure to check out the festivities!

Bernstein’s Broadway Presented by The Florida Orchestra

Celebrate a century of Leonard Bernstein, one of America’s greatest composers and musicians. Featuring some of his best loved works for musical theater. The Florida Orchestra will perform at 2PM. and 8PM. at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Pete on Saturday, October 6.

St. Pete Walking Mural Tour

Hear the inside stories of the making of more than 30 murals found in the Central Arts District in downtown St. Petersburg. The four-block tour begins at Florida CraftArt, 501 Central Ave., each Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and concludes at 11:30 a.m. Call 727-821-7391 or email gallery@FloridaCraftsmen.net to book a tour, which costs $19 for adults and $11 for children. A portion of the proceeds from the tours will be used to fund future murals.

Rowdies vs. Charlotte Independence

Get ‘Rowdie’ at Al Lang Stadium and cheer on the Tampa Bay Rowdies as they take on Charlotte Independence.  Kickoff is at 7:30 pm and tickets start at $25.

Yoga at The Dali

Bring along your yoga mat and come ready to be inspired! Join Lucky Cat Yoga at 10:30 a.m. every Sunday at The Dali Museum for yoga. Classes are held in the Raymond James Community Room or outside in the Avant-garden, both with incredible views of the waterfront. The cost to participate is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased at the Member’s desk.

Masterpieces & Mimosas at the Dali Museum

Let’s get (sur)real. What could be better than a Spanish brunch, complete with mimosas AND the wild works of Salvador Dali? No comparison. Grab a companion for your journey into weird and wonderful from 11 to 4pm in the museum’s Gala Cafe.

Tampa Bay Bridal Show

Wedding planning is hard. Why not make it easier by attending the Tampa Bay Bridal Show at the St. Petersburg Coliseum? With vendors offering everything you need from dresses to stage design and stationary, this event will help ease the stress and simplify some of the more challenging parts.

This Is Not a Selfie Exhibition at MFA St. Pete

In the current “Age of the Selfie,” this exhibition offers a compelling look at the primacy and variety of expressions within self-portraiture through the eyes of an artist. This exhibition features artists who expand the domains of self-portraiture by blurring the distinction between reality and fantasy, artifice and authenticity, and public and private imagery. This Is Not a Selfie provides an opportunity to view the remarkably innovative and diverse methods photographers use, offering new meanings into our own understanding of the self.

Clyde Butcher: Visions of Dali’s Spain

To create this special exhibition, The Dali invited Clyde Butcher, the renowned nature photographer often called “Florida’s Ansel Adams,” to explore and visually document Salvador Dali’s homeland. Clyde Butcher: Vision’s of Dali’s Spain provides a technically brilliant, epically scaled view of Dali’s beloved environs,  to creates a euphoric experience of immersion.

James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art Presents “Art and the Animal”

A special exhibition featuring premier wildlife art from artists around the world! Organized in collaboration with The Society of Animal Artists, “Art and the Animal” will feature over 100 paintings and sculptures, with select art available for purchase. This exhibition is on display at the James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art in downtown St. Pete from July 28 – October 23, 2018.

Rock & Roll Exhibition at The Florida Holocaust Museum

Explore the extraordinary life of renowned music promoter Bill Graham (1931 – 1991) who helped launch and promote the careers of countless rock & roll artists. This exhibition also traces the indomitable spirit of a man who was brought to the United States as an eleven-year-old Jewish refugee fleeing the Nazis, fueling lifelong passion and advocacy for social justice.

Trivia Night at the Hollander Hotel

Join the Hollander Hotel in the Tap Room every Sunday through December 23rd for trivia night! The top three winning teams earn $50, $35, and $15 in Tap House Bucks.

The event takes place from 6PM to 10PM.
