Beach Drive: The Weekender 3/7-3/10


Another week gone in the blink of an eye. Or, at least, that’s how it feels when you’re not staring at the clock waiting for work to get out so you can go enjoy yourself. You’ve made it this far, so reward yourself with the best of DTSP’s events this weekend! (And while we’ve got your attention don’t forget to set your clocks back this Saturday night for Daylight Savings Time.) Thursday includes a Belgian beer fest at the Independent Bar and the always-wonderful reduced admission to our city’s beautiful museums. This weekend is also for the racing-lovers of the city: the Firestone Grand Prix starts Friday and runs through Sunday! Friday also includes the Seafood and Sweets Festival, Foeder for Thought at Green Bench, and more. Saturday hosts a Creative Collaborations event by the St. Pete Opera Company and a walk to fund ALS research and support. Sunday wraps things up with the final day of the Grand Prix, the Sunday Market, and Yoga at the Dali. Have a great weekend, everyone! On your marks, get set, GO!

THURSDAY 3/7

Fine Art after 5pm: reduced admission to The Dali Museum, MFA & Imagine Museum

Fine art can be pricey. Thursdays after 5pm, visit the Dali for just $10, the Imagine Museum for $5, and the MFA for $10. Have a glass of wine and stroll the museums for the perfect Happy Hour.

Royal Palm Market

Enjoy live music, food, shopping and craft cocktails every Thursday at 6PM under the royal palms of St. Pete! This weekly night market is located right next to Intermezzo Coffee & Cocktails and features local artists, boutiques, handmade goods, leather goods, wood burning, clothing & accessories, specialty dog treat vendors, soaps, candles and so much more! Bring the whole family including your pets to this free, weekly event.

Grand Prix Flag Raising

Kick off the annual Firestone Grand Prix St. Pete with the raising of the flag at City Hall, hosted by Mayor Kriseman! The ceremony begins at 10AM. Mayor Kriseman will be joined by Kim Green and Kevin Savoree, owners of the Grand Prix, and Scott Dixon, 5 times series champion.

Cheers to Belgian Beers

Head to the Independent Bar St. Petersburg for a night of Belgian Beers! The mini beer festival includes representatives from several Belgian breweries to tell attendees about the histories of their beer and answer questions. Tickets are $40 at the door. They include two hours of tasting, a tasting glass, and Belgian mussels to compliment the drinks. The event starts at 7PM and ends at 9PM.

Seafood and Sweets Festival

Seafood, sweets, and good times! What could be better?! Join the Gulf to Bay Food Truck Association for food, fun and live entertainment during St. Pete’s annual Seafood and Sweets Festival! Gourmet food trucks will be lined up with special seafood inspired dishes, desserts, and their normal cuisine. This food truck rally goes from 6–11PM and is located at Vinoy Park. Yoga for Lunch at Station House

Unwind and renew with a mid-day Yoga break! Annual Foeder for Thought at Green Bench Brewing

Celebrate Tampa Bay Beer Week by tasting the unique flavors of fermented beers at Green Bench Brewing Company. This event will feature fermentation forward beers in the Green Bench tasting rooms and beer garden, shutting the facility down to accommodate guests interested in sampling and learning about beer from across our local area, nation, and world. Tickets are $100 in advance (purchase in Green Bench’s tasting room to save on processing fees) or $110 at the door day-of, subject to availability. International Women’s Day DJ Workshop

This one is for the ladies! Come to Intermezzo from 8–10PM to learn how to DJ (a fairly male-dominated field)! After the workshop, the afterparty goes until 1AM. The event is free, but registration is encouraged.

Back to the 80s Party

Love the 80s? Now is your chance to party! DJ Speedy Jr will be playing 80s and 90s favorites at the Iberian Rooster’s Subcentral. Friday Night Clay at Morean Center for Clay

St. Pete Opera Company: Creative Collaborations

Maestro Sforzini adapts Igor Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier’s Tale) for a one-of-a-kind experience, joining forces with a brass quintet, fellow bassoonists, and a combo of a stand up bassist and banjo (and more!). General seating is $25 and table seating is $40. Tickets can be purchased here. The event runs from 7:30–10PM.

ALS Walk 2019

Walk to defeat ALS this Saturday, starting at Elva Rouse Park. Proceeds and donations go to funding research for ALS. Walkers can register as individuals or as teams. For registration and for more information, visit here.

St. Pete Walking Mural Tour

Hear the inside stories of the making of more than 30 murals found in the Central Arts District in downtown St. Petersburg. The four-block tour begins at Florida CraftArt, 501 Central Ave., each Saturday morning at 10AM and concludes at 11:30AM. Call 727-821-7391 or email gallery@FloridaCraftsmen.net to book a tour, which costs $19 for adults and $11 for children. A portion of the proceeds from the tours will be used to fund future murals.

LocalShops1 will be hosting a Sunday Market at Caddy’s on Central! This runs weekly from 12PM to 4PM each Sunday through April. Sip mimosas, enter raffles, and enjoy live music as you shop a variety of local vendors!

Yoga at The Dali

Bring along your yoga mat and come ready to be inspired! Join Lucky Cat Yoga at 10:30 AM every Sunday at The Dali Museum for yoga. Classes are held in the Raymond James Community Room or outside in the Avant-garden, both with incredible views of the waterfront. The cost to participate is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Tickets can be purchased at the Member’s desk.

Rock & Roll Exhibition at The Florida Holocaust Museum

Explore the extraordinary life of renowned music promoter Bill Graham (1931 – 1991) who helped launch and promote the careers of countless rock & roll artists. This exhibition also traces the indomitable spirit of a man who was brought to the United States as an eleven-year-old Jewish refugee fleeing the Nazis, fueling lifelong passion and advocacy for social justice (now EXTENDED through June 30th!).

GLOW: The Hand-Painted Photographs of E. G. Barnhill

This special exhibition of the Museum of Fine Arts St. Pete features hand painted photographs of E. G. Barnhill (1894-1987) which offer a unique voyage into the natural splendors of Florida during the early part of the twentieth century.

Jewels of Imagination at the Museum of Fine Arts

The glittering jewelry designs of Jean Schlumberger were the epitome of mid-century elegance. Inspired by nature, his creations graced such notable style icons as Jacqueline Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn. This exhibition highlights the work of this innovative artist, placing his jewelry and objets d’art as inimitable examples of twentieth-century design. This exhibition brings together the extensive Schlumberger collection of Rachel Lambert “Bunny” Mellon, donated to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts between 1985 and 2015. It is the largest, most comprehensive public collection of Jean Schlumberger’s work in the world.

Magritte and Dali: A Surreal Exhibition

The Magritte & Dali Exhibition challenges reality with the works from the world’s two most celebrated surrealists – Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali. In addition to viewing the 30+ works on display in the special exhibit, immersive installations allow you to be part of some of their most iconic pieces of art. The exhibitions runs through May 19, 2019 and tickets are available here.
